Tags, and 999 members. Who, who, WHO will be our thousandth member?

I assume you all read news. If you don't, you should. It's a good way to keep on top of new things happening on LiveJournal. (Please note that news is *not* the place to go if you need help with LiveJournal. That place is the support area. If the FAQs don't help you, you can open a support request. This tangent has been brought to you courtesy of Doing Too Much Support.) Ahem. Since you all read news, you know that tags have gone live.

What does this mean?

Well, I'm hoping it means that the task of searching through the entries in this comm is about to get slightly easier. If I'm correct, I've set it so that when you, the users-who-aren't-maintainers, post your entries, you can automatically tag them with an existing tag. There are no existing tags yet, but there will be soon. I'm going to base them off of the Memories categories, with some extra stuff that I never put into Memories because it was a hassle.

I'm also going to *shudders* go through the old entries and find out which ones I skipped and never got memoried. Wish me luck.

There's something else. Even though I love youse all, I don't know youse all, so I can't trust youse all. That's why this comm only has two maintainers, and that's why right now, you can't come up with your own tags. However, this is all new to me, so I've created a custom friends group for this community, for people whom I or Jazzy trust, who will be able to create their own tags. At the moment, this group consists mostly of those people who generously donated icons for this community's use. That's a kind of thank you, I suppose. This is mostly only a benefit to those people who post often in this community, since they won't have to wait for us to create a tag before using it in their entries. If this experiment goes well, and I don't forget about it, I might expand this friends group. (I'm not a very trusting person. Even though you're all wonderful, and this is honestly one of the best comms, lyk, evah! I still am just not a very trusting person. Wait until you hear my "spoil me and die" rant for Harry Potter.)

Edit: Yes, I'm aware that you can't add tags using the community's main style. Try http://www.livejournal.com/community/book_icons/?style=mine and see if that works better. This'll be fixed. Promise.

Edit again: You'll note that out of the entries I've gotten to, they don't all list all possible (and correct) tags. This is because I'm lazy. I'm asking you kind people to help me out and help tag these entries with the existing tags. Either pick a day from the calendar, or a subject from the memories, and help help help. Comment here if you have a tag you'd like to see, but I haven't added it.

Edit the third: Please comment with your complaints, questions, and other things. I always get nervous posting these, like I'm being a bit of a pest. (Don't comment just to say otherwise, please. Then I'll feel bad)

I can't see myself using tags much cause I'm, well...lazy actually and it would engage my brain to figure it out. I'm wasting all my cells on math at the moment. Still, I should read the news, I was freaked when my layout went poof. I have a paid account, I should see what all that entails and what I can do. (adding this to my huge "should" list with the other stuff. Figure out how to use tags, mop floors....hmmm)

I'd like to help out, but I'm not sure how to add tags to old posts. Can I, or can I only do them with my own? (which I ought to get onto anyway, oughtn't I.)

You ought to be able to add tags to any post, so long as the tag already exists. However, it's not possible in this style. That's why I suggested ?style=mine.

Or, you can go directly to the "add tags" page for each entry. Each entry has a number. The URL for this page is http://www.livejournal.com/community/book_icons/226479.html. I think I've got most of mine, except for ones that aren't in the memories. ;) I totally do not envy you having to go back all that way.

That's one of the reasons I'm jumping on the whole "tags" concept. I figure that if I can get people to tag their own entries, I won't have to.

That... would be a good idea. Right now, you can see them if you try to add a tag to an existing entry. I'll get to work on making a list of currently existing tags.

I WILL help because I have a lot of time on my hands and like doing this sort of thing anyway. But, suggested added tags: lois mcmaster bujold, vorkosigan, pulp, virginia woolf, orlando, dracula. And it should be tolkien and not tolkein but, well, close enough.

As for the rest, link me to entries that need those tags and I'll add them there. Right now I'm going back in time, and I'm only up to the end of April.

I started adding tags from the first post onwards, since you're adding them from the last backwards, so we don't get tangled. I mean, I'm a new member, already tagged all of mine, so I thought I'd tag other people's. This is all right, I hope?

Put tags on based on what the text with the icons says. If there's nothing to explain what the icons were, just ignore them.
