[personal profile] conuly posting in [community profile] book_icons
I'm just interrupting the normal flow of icon-posts for a question, and a request (yes, I'm on topic!)

The question is this: Since the icons in this community all seem to be from books I like, it seems like everyone posting icons has the exact same taste in books as I do. That's not surprising, considering I mostly advertised when I joined communities based on books I like, but it does make me feel vaguely guilty/overbearing. This is BOOK icons, not books-I-like icons. I'd like to expand the variety somewhat, maybe have some icons posted from books I haven't read... But I thought I'd run this past everyone else before going hogwild and asking the owners of other book-related communities if I can advertise there. I really don't want to do this and then hear "this place was better before all these books I can't stand were here" or "wow, now we're swamped with icons!" or something like that. Um, to recap: Is this okay?

And the request:

All the book-buying for my niece and nephew (one year old!) has started a wave of nostalgia. Does anybody have any "very hungry caterpillar" icons? Or maybe amelia bedelia?

Thank you for reading, especially the part at the beginning which is really long and kinda run-on.

Go for it! I'd love to see different icons to balance out all of those that seem to be for sci-fi and fantasy books.

I think you're right, we should expand. Go for it!

Variety rocks. And anyway, even if books I don't like start coming in, that won't make me stop making icons for books I do like; so it'll balance out :-)

Made *very* quickly. I'll look around s'more and make prettier ones later when I am not being goaded to hurry and shower so I can go out. I can add text, too. Later. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a lot of pictures from the book on from a quick glace at a search.

Oh, and more people and more books = good thing. :)

There's a couple more I made playing with my brushes, but I dunno that I like them.. They're too busy and didn't turn out as well as the other icons I made while messing with brushes.

Bear in mind I'm new and don't make icons, but I have to say I like the range of icons here. Some I'm almost completely unfamiliar with, but they're always nice-looking and interesting.

It would be nice to see what else you can come up with, but I feel like I could make a request here if I wanted. Thanks for all the icons, they're great.

I think some of the reason that there are so many icons of a certain "type" of books (classic, fantasy, young adult, stuff like that) is that there's alot more artwork for those around. In fact, last night I got a hankering to make some book icons, but I found the search for art having to do with "Shogun" or "The Da Vinci Code" or whatever to be kinda daunting.

Couldn't you get a picture related to the book and stick a quote on it or something? Like Da Vinci Code -- now, I haven't read the book, but the title sounds vaguely as if something by Da Vinci might work..?

Yes, you certainly could find many works of art mentioned in the book, but I guess I couldn't think of a way to make them into good icons. Perhaps someone more creative than me could.

Well, if the book is about art there's prolly some good quotes regarding the pieces. Maybe. Like I said, I haven't read it... nice colour/texture bases with quotes are probably always a good way to make icons for books without good cover art.

Maybe I'll give that a whirl

Mmm, that's what I had to do with Whale Rider... sucks that the only art around for so much is movies.
