These are a couple I've recently put together.  I do all kinds of icons as it strikes my fancy.  As usual, feel free to use these, just credit me in your userpic comments.  Constructive criticism welcomed.







(Before you say it, yes, I know the Hemingway icon needs slowed down a bit.  I'm planning to do that soon.  And before you ask it, yes, the part about the gun is true.)

I'm working on one based on Alice in Wonderland.  I should be able to post that here in the next couple of days.

Presuming you know how to get the still frames you want (and that you're talking about a relatively crude level of "animation"), go download the freeware program Unfreez (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/) and simply string them together using that program, setting the appropriate time delays and looping (or lack thereof).

I've been told by more than one person that I always seem to find the hardest possible way of doing any given task.  This may be a good example.

A) I'm cheap and B) I'm working on my parents' computer.  These two factors immensely complicate the process.  As a result I juggle back and forth between four different programs.  I use Unfreez (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/) to string the frames together.  I use Arcsoft Photoimpression (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0411/04110902arcsoft_photoimpression.asp) to add text and do any substantial editing to the picture.  Unfreez only works with .gifs, which Photoimpression is unable to use, so I have to use XnView (http://www.xnview.com/) to convert between those two.  And for convenience's sake I sometimes use Microsoft Photo Editor to do cropping and resizing.

I'm quite certain that if I spent a bit of money, I could get a single program which could do all of these things.  I don't care to spend that money right now though, so I'm using this system.

Complicated?  Yes.  Functional?  Also yes.

frequently, my brain does odd things. i once tried using the username tag in the comments, and decided i'd done something wrong since it wasn't working correctly. it's just occurred to me that the reason that it didn't work correctly is that i was still on the edit page not on the view page.

GJ is GreatestJournal, Livejournal's inferior cousin. It's basically very similar, but not quite as nice or as popular (and lets you have 1000 userpics for free).

Does that make sense?
