A question about crediting

I hope this post is okay here. If I take an icon I always credit as asked in the pic comments or keyword but... how can anyone see that? When I see an icon on an LJ post that I love, and I try to find out who made it so I can see if I can get permission to use it, I can't find any way I can see the pics comments. Presumably there must be - but no one on my friends list could tell me how it worked either so I'm not the only one lost. Additionally - if someone just says please credit then where is the prefered place to do so? Thanks.

Go to your userinfo and click on your default icon. This will take you to a listing of ALL your icons. The keywords and comments will appear there :)

if you go to someone's user info & click on their icon you should be able to see their icon comments & keywords.
putting their username in your comments & keywords is the usual thing. i have seen some put credit on their user info, as well, but that is not common.

At least for me, the preferred place for LiveJournal is in the Comments field, because then the poor person can actually use meaningful phrases as their keywords, and not have to remember who made each icon in order to use the silly things.
I think on GreatestJournal all they have is the keyword field, so a lot of people say 'credit in keywords' from force of habit.

Also, LiveJournal only recently added the comments field for icons. I began putting credit for icons I used in my userinfo, because I did not want to muck up my keywords with usernames. Now I put credit both in the icon's comment field and in my userinfo.

Yes, I can see that. I have so few icons it has never been a problem, though if you have two made by the same person it can get tricky. Thanks.

The other good thing about using comments instead of keywords is that you can have them all correspond to your different fandoms or moods or something, and when you delete, say, the Curse of Chalion one, you can upload another and give it the same keyword and it will come up where you had the last one. Um. If that made sense.

I'm not sure it works for all browsers, I use IE, but if you hover the cursor over the icon, it will display the keywords. So, if you credit in the keywords, anyone can see who made the icon by just hovering over it instead of going to the user's picture page.

That's not so much dependent on the browser as it is on the LJ layout. Some styles support the keyword-hover effect, some don't.
