hey, what is up in your icon? all i can make out are striped socks and pantaloons... what else is going on in it? Is it a frame from an Alice in Wonderland book plate?

Yeah, it's a detail of one of Tenniel's Alice illustrations, from Through the Looking Glass. The icon was made by so_spiffed. The whole feeling of her curled up cozy in the chair sort of captures a comfort vibe I really dig.

BTW, LJ says the 'censorship causes blindness' icon is too big, the filesize I mean, so since it was basically black and white anyway I opened it in irfanview and converted to grayscale and re-saved that as a modified copy and it shrunk it right down. I'm still crediting you though. Is that cool?

Thanks so much for letting me know that. I use iPhoto to do a bunch of my icons and it doesn't really attend to the file size. I guess I should run them through an automated Photoshop button. Nice heads up.

Thank you. It is a bit of a mini exhibit. I tend to make swaths of icons like that.

A lot of the images I don't know who they are by, I just nabbed them off Google image searches. But I can tell you the two photographers whose work I featured here are Sally Mann and Saudek. You can search their work on Google images if you want to see more.

yes indeed, Sally Mann is the photographer who used her children as models as they were growing up, and definitely caught flak for it. I watched a documentary about Art in the 21st Century and she was one of the artists featured... they interviewed her kids too... it was very cool. She's one of my heroes.

Maybe I'm mistaken? I thought Lj was trying to keep pedophiles and such off the site and in their efforts did a mass sweep of communities/journals with certain interests in their profiles. I also was under the impression they worked with those communites/journals and restored those that shouldn't have been banned.

Maybe I'm totally wrong, and in that case what has beeen going on? Becuase I'm so confused.

LJ deletions started again recently. it's a huge issue and it has many perspectives. LJ has deleted journals and communities without warning due to some art that is contained inside them, namely Harry Potter related drawings which depict fictional characters engaged in underage sexualized situations. LJ has finally clarified it's position regarding content and TOS. This is an artistic response to some of the issues raised, which to my mind relates to censorship in general. Thanks for commenting, let me know if you need more information and I'll try to dig up some links for you to follow to read up on what has happened.

Access to LiveJournal is a privilege, not a right. You can't protest LJ deletion without calling for censorship yourself. LJ doesn't agree with pornographic content and it's well within their rights to rid it from their site.

Sorry, I have to call bullshit. One icon about books out of almost 100 is not enough to justify this post in a book icon community. The dramatic nature of these icons is a joke.

Hi. Actually if I have a paid account, access to LJ is a business contract. I have paid for services, and agreed to a contract. The recent LJ deletions have been, in the opinion of many people, confusing, random, and not previously clearly defined in the TOS. Many people have been working to clarify with LiveJournal and Six Apart (their parent company) what their stance is going to be regarding certain content. LJ allows alot of pornographic content in various communities. They have recently started deleting communities and journals with specific kinds of prurient content due to pressure from a group which calls itself Warriors for Innocence, and due to additional pressure from their advertisers. It is indeed well within their rights as a business to choose in which manner they choose to do business. Those who do not care for their business practices can and will take their money elsewhere in the future. Meanwhile, I have chosen to respond to issues raised by posting an artistic offering in icon form. I'm not sure what you mean by You can't protest LJ deletion without calling for censorship yourself. I think it's obvious that I *can* protest the nature of the deletions, as have many many clients of LiveJournal. If you mean that you intend to try and censor me, then I guess you are within your rights to attempt to do so.

There are several book-related icons within this post, and the post relates to censorship in general, which is book-related. The moderator of this community gave the okay on this post, so apparently she felt it qualified to be included here.
