Just wondering, what sort of program does a person need in order to make icons? Do I have to go out and purchase something or would my laptop likely have come with something?

There are all sorts of programs that one can use. The most basic, that are found on lots of computers already, are Microsoft Paint & Microsoft Photo Editor (I'm sure Macs come with some sort of program like these, but I don't know what it's called). Those have the bare bones of what you'll want. Photoshop & Paint Shop Pro (PSP) are what most people use. I have Photoshop Elements, which is like the poor man's version of Photoshop & has all the good stuff, but not everything that photoshop does. You can find a trial download of PSE & all the other photoshop programs on adobe.com
