I'm not miffed.
Sep. 26th, 2004 07:02 pmI was expecting this day for a while.
So, I've got a question. Exactly how much leeway should we allow for movies? To my mind, most animated films have very little in common with their bookish predecessors - but I have no intention of sorting through and saying "this animated film is good, this isn't". I don't want to spend my time judging on a case-by-case basis. I'm lazy. And while the recent animated film icons ARE from a film that's very close to the books (peter pan), other animated films aren't (the recent edition of "the three musketeers").
SO! [Poll #356564]
Edit: If you don't want those icons, would a sister community (for book-movie icons, and no, not the contest comm that already exists) be okay? If I did that, though, I'd want to move ALL the movie icons there.
Edit again:
This is a very close poll. However, most people don't seem to have a problem with it, and the actual yesses are outvoting the nos by two votes. So unless there's a drastic change by morning, I'm cool with animated movie icons. Glad to see you all, thanks for playing, if I upset you, please accept my apologies. When I get money, I'll buy you some paid time or something.

my two cents
Date: 2004-09-26 04:16 pm (UTC)Yes, most movies have books related to them in some form, either as loose inspiration (Disney's Three Musketeers) direct inspiration, (the LotR movies) or novelization (Pick one, hmm, the first ones I can think of are the novelizations of the Star Wars movies).
So my arguement would be that there are better places for such icons to be presented and appreciated and that we needn't stretch the parameters of this community to include them.
Then again, I'm not a icon community moderator and I don't make icons; I'm simply an appreciative audience for those with the skill to make them.
What s/he said!
Date: 2004-09-27 07:25 am (UTC)A sister community, however, one that is used for movies based upon books? That's brilliant! There obviously is an audience for such icons, even if it isn't often my cup of tea. (Current icon aside...)

Date: 2004-09-26 05:15 pm (UTC)I invited you to join because I liked the book icons you made - from a book that existed long before Disney ever did.
I probably wouldn't change the rules over this unless a huge number of people spoke up saying they really hate animated film icons. I thought I'd post this now because, really, this is the first time we've had one of those, and I had a sudden vision of the "three musketeers" starring mickey mouse.
Don't worry about it. I still like you, and your icons (they're nice, cool, and simple - all wonderful things) and I really am not upset at you - as I said in your post, even if I did change the rules, I wouldn't delete your post. It's not your fault if the rules get changed on you. It's mine. I'm not good at saying things the way I mean them, so I do beg your understanding.
Besides, if I did feel pushed to ban movie icons, I'd shunt them into a different community, not ban them altogether.

Date: 2004-09-26 05:16 pm (UTC)I like to occasionally pretend that running this comm is work, so I put up polls like this and make sure the rules are to everybody's liking. It's not, after all, *my* comm. The community belongs to its members.

Date: 2004-09-26 06:13 pm (UTC)Well.
I did, certainly, and I'm not about to get into a silly argument "you didn't overreact" "yes I did" "no you didn't!" "YES. I. DID!" or anything.
In the future, i make my posts like they were before today- book images only.
Seriously, don't worry about it. *offers cookie*

Date: 2004-09-26 06:54 pm (UTC)... well, for some books/series/movies or whatever, some of the best- occasionally the only- appropriate pictures do come from movies. Like the endless HP ones. They're only endless because there really isn't all that much good fanart, in a style appropriate to icons, that is eccesarily what you wast to use. (I mean, thre's SO much good fanart... but some of it is really tough to icon. I tried to icon some of my favourite fanart, which was in pencil sketches, and it just looked messy so I went with a film picture with the same feeling.) And then sometimes the films have a completely different feeling to the books, like the examples you gave. But... (not really rue where I'm going with this) I think there is a discernable difference between icons made with the books in mind, using movie graphics, and icons made with the movie in mind. Say you have a ron icons with "emotional range of a teaspoon" text... that's got to have OotP in mind. :D
So I guess what I'm trying to say is... this is a community for book icons. And books get made into movies. And of course it's impossible to go through and say oh, that icon's thinking about the books, that one's not, that one is, and so forth. So.. let them in. But we shoudl all try to think of the books first. :D

Attempt to be on topic:
As long as they feel like the book, it's all good. :p
