more Narnian icons
Nov. 5th, 2004 09:57 pmAfter more than 30 years, one of my most treasured sets of books is still Collier's boxed paperback edition of The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Even beyond the stories themselves, I've always loved the Roger Hane cover illustrations. While I've seen others refer to them as "psychedelic", that never seemed accurate to me (except, perhaps, for the stylized vegetation); the paintings have a lovely spare quality to them, their uncluttered but simultaneously fantastical elements highlighted within Art Deco framings.
I hope you'll forgive the occasional image flaw in these; while I did some post-processing to fix the obvious creases and scuffs, scanning three decade-old paperbacks doesn't yield quite the same quality as a recent illustration. ;-)
